I have the best memories from my childhood of the Fourth of July. My dad is a firefighter in the city I grew up in and the place I moved back to so that I could raise my kids here. As a part of his job for many years, he shot off the fireworks – like literally. Because of this we always had the best view. Even after the fireworks were done and everyone went home from City Park, he would shoot off the ones that didn’t make the show. We would clean up after the crowd left, one year I scored 50 free Wendy’s frosty coupons and my summer was made.
Even before the night festivities began at the park with live bands, food trucks, and craft fairs, we would head to our neighborhood pool, Village Green, for water games, lunch, and the most important part of the day- the cannonball contest. My dad would come just for that and sometimes able to stay for lunch and every year (except one) he won! We all screamed and cheered for him and well, as a little girl I was so proud. Okay, okay, so I am still proud to this day.
From all the fantastic memories from my childhood, I, of course, hold sacred the Fourth of July holiday. And while I think that nothing tops my childhood memories, I think my hubby and I do a pretty rockin’ job. We kept the tradition of the day at the pool and then the fireworks since my dad no longer is involved with them we kind of move around and try out different things and spots.
Along with great memories of sunscreen, swimming, cannonball contest and fireworks, the food has always been pointe on. Below are a few suggestions to make the entire day special, including my Fudge Brownie No-Bake Cheesecake. So whether you go all out for the holiday or keep it simple, we have some ideas that will have your guests in awe and not just because of the fireworks. XOXO San
