Spaghetti Sauce
I thought growing up that homemade spaghetti was hard and complicated. I guess this came from watching my dad as a little girl, prepare his sauce. He added so many things to it, that I thought I just don’t have time for that. But oh, man it made the house smell so good!

In college, I ate spaghetti sauce at least once a week, then in my early professional career before kids, I had it 3 times a week if I wasn’t traveling. I literally pulled a jar of Classico sauce out of the fridge, yes cold, and pour it over hot noodles, it seemed to heat the sauce and cool down the noodles at the same time… Oh boy, what was I thinking?! I thought that tasted good. Then I discovered that homemade was so much better and super easy to make.

I always, like my dad just throws things together. Sometimes I’ll add mushrooms, diced green peppers, extra tomatoes, and even carrots. But this Spaghetti Sauce recipe below is my base. I actually am blogging this upon request from my mother-in-law who calls me for it. We were making it on the same day and I told her that this week I would finally get it on my blog.

So here you are, a delicious sauce that is easy to throw together. Go ahead and add your own twist or favorite veggies, you won’t be disappointed.
Enjoy! XOXO San

How do you make homemade Spaghetti Sauce?

  • Over medium-high heat and in a large saucepan add olive oil, heat olive oil for a few minutes, add onion and cook for 3 minutes, then add chopped garlic. Cook until onion is soft and translucent, approximately another 3-5 minutes.

  • Add red wine to deglaze pan, let it cook for 3-5 minutes until wine is cooked down. Add in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and seasoning. Stir, let it come to a slow boil. If you are adding meat, add it now.

  • Turn heat to low (lowest setting), cover, and let it simmer 1 hour. Occasionally stir to make sure it is not cooking to the bottom.

  • Occasionally, I will add an extra can of diced tomatoes just to make it a little chunkier, if I do this I will add additional Italian seasoning, 2 tablespoons. This adds an extra 2 servings.
  • Serve with your favorite pasta dish and enjoy!
