I love powdered sugar cake donuts! I will take them any day over chocolate cake donuts. Now that I have my very own recipe, and the donuts are baked, not fried…. oh man, we are in trouble. I will be making them all too often.

I have the best camping memories from my childhood with those donuts, as it was the only time we got to eat them. Now, my kids have those same kinds of memories, except they call them “Papa” donuts because they get them only from their Papa, my dad.

Every holiday, camping trip, or family get together he has them, just for the grandkids. They love it. I love their little powdered sugar mustaches, it is too cute.

Enjoy the donuts! XOXO San

How do you make Powdered Sugar Cake Donuts?

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 2 donut pans with cooking spray.

  • In a small glass measuring cup, mix together milk and vinegar. Allow this to sit until it starts to curdle, or about 5 minutes.

  • Melt butter in a small bowl and set aside to cool.
  • In a medium mixing bowl add together flours, instant pudding, white sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • Whisk the honey into the curdled milk and beat until well combined, then add the egg. Whisk until combined.

  • Combine the wet and dry ingredients. Don’t over mix or the donuts will turn out dense.

  • Spoon batter into a piping bag or a Ziploc with a corner snipped off. Pipe the dough evenly into the prepared pans, about 2/3 full. This should make 8 donuts.

  • Bake for 7 minutes, remove from oven and cool for 1 minute before you turn them over onto a cooling rack. Let the donuts cool completely before moving to the next step.

  • Melt 6 tablespoons of butter in a small bowl. Add powdered sugar to a large mixing bowl. The recipe calls for 1 1/3 cups, but I like to add a little extra.

  • Dip the entire donut in the melted butter, make sure both sides are covered. Then gently shake off the excess butter, and place in powdered sugar until completely coated, place back on cooling rack. Repeat with the rest of the donuts, once all donuts are covered.

  • Place the first donut back in the powdered sugar and add a second coating, gently shaking off the excess. Repeat with remaining donuts, ending with the last donut. Repeat sugar coating process if desired. Enjoy.

  • Store on cooling rack until ready to eat, you can even leave them out overnight!
