I am making a special pie to celebrate National Pie Day with some friends. Because I mean come on who doesn’t want a reason to eat pie – and Pie Day is just the perfect occasion, right? And this pie that I am making is all about chocolate. So when I started to assemble the ingredients to make it, the only thing that stood out like a misfit was the pie crust. A traditional crust just wouldn’t work. I mean it would taste fine, but a chocolate pie crust would look so much better and let’s get real anything with chocolate is better.

I was super excited to make this pie crust and nibble on it while I was rolling it out. We like chilled hot chocolate instead of water to bring the dough together, but you could also use chilled coffee.

I can’t wait to make this Chocolate Pie Crust over and over and over again. I will be remaking all of my pies with this pie crust – like my Chocolate Cranberry Pie and Pumpkin Fudge Pie. Pie making just got a whole lot more delicious.

Enjoy friends. XOXO San

How do you make Chocolate Pie Crust?

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and sugar.

Add in chilled butter and cut into the flour using a pastry blender (my favorite kitchen tool), fork and a knife or just your fingers. Cut in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Slowly add cold hot chocolate and mix together using a fork and stir until dough becomes soft.

Slightly knead the dough until it is smooth and them shape into a circular disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour (you can keep it in there up to 2 days).

Remove dough from refrigerator and set out for 5-10 minutes at room temperature. Roll out the dough on a cocoa powder or floured surface and transfer to 9-inch deep-dish pie pan. Making sure to trim the crust that is over hanging.

Cover the crust with plastic wrap and set back in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before adding filling and/or baking.

Enjoy!
