Black Forest Cookies are rich and soft with a sweet, cherry-filled center, allowing you to have a bite of Black Forest heaven instead of a slice.

Black Forest Cookies in a row on a counter with frosting, chocolate sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry on top of each cookie

Black Forest Cake is known for the perfect marriage of a rich chocolate cake & cherries which are commonly soaked in Kirsch (a German fruit brandy). While originating in Germany, the Black Forest Cake has become a favorite in America and Sweden. While there haven’t been many changes to the original recipe, people have been swapping out the Kirsch for other things like cherry juice or pie filling, making this cake a little sweeter than the original.

On that note, you know me and sweet things, so I thought I would take this cake and condense it into a rich, soft cookie with a sweet, cherry-filled center, allowing you to have a bite of Black Forest heaven instead of a slice.

Enjoy! XOXO San

How do you make Black Forest Cookies?

Cookie
  • Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
  • Combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl and set aside.
  • Beat butter on high speed until creamy. Scrape down sides of bowl as needed. Switch to medium speed and beat in the sugars until well combined.
  • Add in the eggs and vanilla extract, and continue to mix scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. With the mixer on low add the dry and slowly beat until dough is formed.

  • Scoop the dough with a tablespoon then roll with your hands to smooth the outside. Place on a cookie sheet and press your thumb in the center to make a slight indent. Open the can of pie filling and place 2 cherries and some filling in the middle of each cookie.

  • Place cookie sheet in oven and bake for 12-14 minutes.

  • Allow the cookies to cool on the cookie sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Once completely cooled you may take a little of the pie filling, no cherries and scrape a little on the center of each cookie to add some additional cherry flavor. This is completely optional (the kids love it).
Frosting
  • Cream together butter and cream cheese until smooth. Gradually mix in powdered sugar and milk 1 tablespoons at a time until you get a smooth creamy mixture that is a little stiff but easy to spread.
  • Frost each cookie gently by getting a tablespoon or so of frosting on your knife. Starting in the center place the frosting on the cookie and gently work your way out. Top with a maraschino cherry, chocolate covered cherry or cherry pie filling.

Kids review: I knew they would be a hit because my kids love cherries! They ate these like people eat Oreos – frosting and filling first then the chocolate cookie. The only disappointment expressed was that they only got one.
