Whole Wheat Cornbread slices with a pat of butter served on a plate

I love a good cornbread and by good, I mean I like mine a little on the sweeter side. The thing is I also wanted my cornbread to have whole grains, so I recently came up with this recipe.

Enjoy XOXO San

How do you make Whole Wheat Cornbread?

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spray or lightly grease a 9 inch round cake pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Stir in egg, milk, and butter until well combined. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.

My favorite kitchen tools used to make Whole Wheat Cornbread:

This post may contain affiliate links. See my Full Disclosure for further details.

MIXING BOWLS: I love having a variety of sizes of mixing bowls. From small to large, I find that having at least 3 bowls of different sizes has been essential in my kitchen. I prefer Pyrex because of the durability.

MEASURING CUPS: Nothing beats a good set of measuring cups that last a long time. I love metal measuring cups because of their durability.

MEASURING SPOONS: I have to have a metal set of measuring spoons on hand. The plastic ones just don’t last long in our house thanks in large part to the garbage disposal.

ROUND CAKE PANS – my favorite size to use for a round cake pan is the 9-inch and I prefer dark over light pans. I always have 2 on hand because layered cakes are one of my favorite things to make for dessert.

  1. Given the recipe title, I’m assuming the all-purpose flour listed actually refers to whole wheat flour in some form. Which whole wheat flour do you recommend? white whole wheat? whole wheat pastry flour? Thank you. 🙂

    1. Oh thanks Hannah! Yes, I used my original recipe and revised it to whole wheat – and I just make it from memory now, so I didn’t even notice. THANK YOU! I like to use 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat flour, Bob’s Red Mill is my favorite.

      1. Last night I made your cornbread alongside a pot of chili con carne. I used whole wheat pastry flour (the freshest whole-grain flour I had on hand) and the end product was wonderfully light and cake-like for whole wheat, my husband and mother-in-law detected no difference from standard Northern cornbread. Granted, neither of these two cook or bake nor possess very discerning palates, but both are diehard lovers of white bread and all things heavily processed. (I admit I ignorantly heightened my husband’s love for white flour, when in the first half of our marriage I introduced him to homemade white bread. Doh!) Thank you for helping me to gradually convert my family (and myself) to healthier habits. 😉 I pinned several whole wheat cornbread recipes to try, but won’t be needing those now. 🙂

        Thank you again!
